Student Pilots and External Pressures, Jon Kotwicki CFII/MEI

Student pilots, due to lack of experience, are more susceptible to being rushed. They are also often not comfortable saying “unable”, as they believe the air traffic controller to have more experience than they do.

It has happened more than once that an inexperienced student pilot has accepted a runway with a tailwind that ended up being beyond their piloting abilities, or has accepted a LAHSO clearance that they really were not comfortable with. 

Similarly, students have lost aircraft control when attempting to expedite their runway turnoff while still trying to bleed off speed from the landing, often due either to the tower requesting the turnoff be expedited, or at an uncontrolled field, a pilot behind you who turned his base/final too soon. 

As flight instructors, it’s important than ever that we teach our students that flight safety is ultimately their responsibility. Air Traffic Controllers expect pilots to speak up if they are given a direction or clearance they feel cannot be safely accomplished. Talk with your student about external pressures of this nature and ensure they are making safe decisions!
